Inititally entered discussions in September 2020
Euronext has completed the €4.4bn purchase of Borsa Italiana from the London Stock Exchange, in the latest sign of consolidation within the European exchange market.
Euronext initially entered talks with the LSE in September 2020 with the UK exchange forced to offload Borsa Italiana by the European Commission in order to complete the $27bn acquisition of Refinitiv.
The acquisition will create a business with approximately €12.2bn of cash equities and ETFs traded on an average daily basis.
The announcement of the deal was initially announced on 9 October 2020 and is the seventh exchange the firm owns.
Why the London Stock Exchange is selling Borsa Italiana to Euronext
Stéphane Boujnah, CEO of Euronext, commented: “With the completion of the acquisition of the Borsa Italiana, Euronext delivers on its ambition to build the leading pan-European market infrastructure, connecting local economies to global capital markets, for the benefits of all market participants across Euronext’s markets.
“In addition, Euronext increases its business diversification with new capabilities in fixed income trading and clearing, as well as consolidation of a significant CSD.”
