Business murals will add artistic touch to downtown – Coshocton Tribune

Jaidyn Brink relishes the notion her artwork is part of the revitalization of the area

COSHOCTON – Jaidyn Brink relishes the notion  her artwork will grace downtown Coshocton for decades to come and is part of the continued revitalization of the area.

The incoming senior at Coshocton High School will attend an art camp at the Cleveland Institute of Art this summer. She’s raising money for the program. Brink’s art teacher, John Miller, did some networking and landed her jobs of painting murals on two downtown businesses.

Brink is finishing a selfie-wall on Rust Décor at 115 S. Sixth St. She’ll next start a painting of an art nouveau style crow with a diamond in its beak on the rear of the Dean’s Jewelry building, 409 Main St. No others are lined up right now, but Brink would be interested in doing more. A mural is also being done by other artists at Olde Rustic Finds, 419 Main St.

“I think it’s really cool that something I’m doing will be here for a very long time. I’m really happy I get to share art with people,” Brink said.

Brink called art a safe space. She hopes to become a freelance illustrator. She plans to study business in college so she can learn to manage her own career.

“Art helps me to wind down. It’s, honestly, meditative for me,” Brink said. “It’s really comforting to me.”

Rust Décor under owners Kevin and Jill Sheridan opened in the new location in March. The building features an airbnb, crafting workshops and items from more then 30 vendors. A lot of renovations was done to the structure and Jill said a goal was to make the shop an aesthetically pleasing element of downtown.

She feels a mural will be a way to draw in tourists. Since they opened in the new location, she said about 75% of customers have been from out of town. Jill is a fan of home improvement shows and the HGTV series “Home Town.”

“They always talk about how it bring people to the community when you have murals,” Jill said. “I thought it would be a great thing to bring people in and kind of fun.”

Main Street has been on the upswing the past couple of years with building renovations and new businesses opening. Currently, Our Town Coshocton and city officials are pushing for an entrepreneur to buy the Selby Building. A YouTube video with a tour of the structure was recently posted by Investment Joy.

Michelle Turner-Ganz, co-owner of Dean’s Jewelry and member of Coshocton City Council, said she’s happy to see the drive. Even something as simple as the murals can serve as a component of beautification and bring in tourists. Other cities in the region, like Newark, are known for downtown murals.

“We are really looking forward to Jaidyn painting our mural. I love art and feel murals liven up a space and make people happy,” Turner-Ganz said.
